Toronto Record Pressing Vinyl

Vinyl records are pressed using a process that involves several steps

  1. Mastering: The audio recording is transferred to a master disc, typically made of lacquer-coated aluminum, using a cutting lathe. This process involves cutting grooves into the master disc that correspond to the audio waveform.
  2. Electroforming: The master disc is used to create a metal stamper. First, the master disc is coated with a thin layer of silver to make it electrically conductive. Then, it is submerged in an electrolytic solution, and an electric current is passed through it. This causes metal to be deposited onto the surface of the master disc, forming a metal negative of the grooves.
  3. Pressing: The metal stamper is mounted onto a hydraulic press. Vinyl pellets are placed into a hopper on the press, and they are heated until they become soft and pliable. A hydraulic arm then pushes the softened vinyl between the two stampers, imprinting the grooves onto the vinyl and forming the record.
  4. Trimming: Excess vinyl around the edges of the record is trimmed off, leaving the finished disc.
  5. Labeling and Packaging: Labels are applied to the center of the record, and the records are placed into sleeves or jackets for protection.

Throughout this process, quality control measures are in place to ensure that the records meet certain standards for sound quality and physical integrity.
